HUNKY JESUS is a feature documentary that explores the legacy of the San Francisco chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a global, secular order of queer and trans "nuns" who combat guilt, shame, and exclusion through joy, humor, activism, and irreverence, serving their communities while challenging bigotry and redefining spirituality.

Director Statement

In a world filled with conformity and restraint, HUNKY JESUS seeks to illuminate a remarkable community that challenges societal norms, and spreads joy. Inspired by the works of the Maysles Brothers and the whimsical, surreal essence of Federico Fellini, our film aims to capture the spirit of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence—an extraordinary group of individuals who embody larger-than-life archetypes and dare to redefine the boundaries of self-expression.

This lyrical film will be concert-driven, interweaving Hunky Jesus 2023 with compelling interviews, Monty Python-esque animation, and never-before-seen archival footage from the SPI archives. Additionally, we’ll include news clips of the current obsession with drag panic and transphobia by the religious right.

Our documentary has a theatrical aesthetic. We filmed the 2023 Hunky Jesus event with eight cameras, including a jib, so the breathtaking event is fully covered. Not only did we capture the burlesque show, but also the emotionally charged audience and backstage antics. During interviews, the Sisters were dramatically lit and wore full drag. Interviews were filmed in a chapel with ornate, stained glass windows and mystical shafts of light in the background.

At its core, our documentary aspires to celebrate the Sisters as cultural rockstars, shattering stereotypes and inspiring audiences to embrace their authentic selves. We aim to present them not as mere subjects under scrutiny but as enchanting figures, deserving of admiration. One of the primary intentions behind this film is to humanize the Sisters, to present them as multifaceted beings with complex narratives, emotions, and dreams. We will delve into their personal journeys, exploring the diverse paths that led them to this liberating and empowering collective.

By capturing intimate moments and engaging in profound conversations, we seek to unveil the humanity that resides within the Sisters, fostering empathy and understanding among viewers.

Our approach is defined by a respectful and non-judgmental gaze, aiming to showcase the Sisters' stories through a lens of compassion. The Maysles brothers' influence guides our commitment to capturing the raw essence of our subjects, portraying their vulnerabilities and resilience with honesty and integrity. Through interviews, we learn that many of the Sisters felt excluded by the religion that which they were raised with, when they came out as gay, so they sought out a spiritual community that embraced them wholeheartedly. Through their testimonies, we will unravel the complexities of their lives, shedding light on the challenges they face while also emphasizing the joy and community spirit that unites them.
