Fab Artist Residency Program
Powered by the Fabulous Arts Foundation & Fab LGBTQ+ Center
The Fab Artist Residency Program provides dedicated studio space and creative support for emerging and established artists seeking an inclusive environment to develop their work. Housed within the Fab LGBTQ+ Center at 925 Maddox, the residency fosters artistic exploration, collaboration, and community engagement while reducing barriers to access for LGBTQ+ artists and other underrepresented creatives.
Residents receive access to a physical studio space, opportunities to exhibit their work, and the ability to engage with the broader community through workshops, artist talks, open studios, and special events. The program is designed to nurture artistic growth while strengthening connections between artists and the communities they serve.
More than just a workspace, the Fab Artist Residency Program is an investment in creative expression, cultural visibility, and community well-being. Residency fees and sponsorship support help sustain both the residency program and the Fab LGBTQ+ Center, ensuring that artists have access to a welcoming space where they can create, collaborate, and contribute to a vibrant and diverse cultural ecosystem.
1. Program Structure & Logistics
Residency Cohorts & Duration
Term Length: Residents are selected for a 3-month or 6-month term (determined at acceptance based on project scope).
Studio Access: Residents receive designated studio access during standard facility operating hours, allowing a consistent physical workspace to develop new collections.
Community Integration Requirements
Because this is a community-first residency housed within a living, breathing LGBTQ+ Center, accepted artists commit to actively giving back to the community during their term through:
One (1) Community Workshop or Peer Support Activation: Sharing their creative medium with center visitors, youth, or community members.
One (1) Artist Talk / Open Studio Event: Opening their process up to the public for an interactive evening of dialogue and cultural visibility.
A Capstone Exhibition: A featured presentation or showcase of the work developed during the residency, hosted inside the main gallery space.
2. Financial Framework & Gallery Alignment
Facility Integration & Direct Sales
The Gallery Commission: In alignment with our center-wide standard framework, any sales of physical artwork, merchandise, or crafts generated by the artist during their capstone exhibition or through direct studio visits at 925 Maddox are subject to a 30% gallery commission retained by the Fabulous Arts Foundation to support center operations.
Program Fees & Subsidies: Monthly studio resource fees are determined per cohort. The foundation actively pursues corporate sponsorships and grant funding to offer fully subsidized (free) residency slots for historical, underrepresented, or low-income LGBTQ+ and BIPOC creators whenever funding is secured.
3. Studio Code of Conduct: The Living Art Rules
Because the 925 Center is an active hub hosting community groups, mental health peer networks, and public events alongside the studios, residents must adhere to strict spatial guidelines:
Respecting Active Spaces: Artists are expected to maintain an organized footprint. Conversely, outside event renters are strictly prohibited from moving, altering, or handling active Artist-in-Residence studio equipment or works-in-progress.
Safe Mediums Only: Due to building ventilation and the shared nature of the community center, the use of toxic, highly flammable, or heavy aerosol mediums (such as chemical-heavy resin or industrial spray paints) is strictly limited or prohibited unless specific outdoor ventilation setups are authorized.
Shared Harmony: Studio hours must respect the scheduling of sensitive community programming occurring in adjacent rooms.
